Governing codes

  • ASME A17.1 / CSA B44, Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators — governs elevators, including the limited-use/limited-application (LULA) provisions the commercial elevator is built to.
  • ASME A18.1, Safety Standard for Platform Lifts and Stairway Chairlifts — governs vertical and inclined platform (wheelchair) lifts.
  • ADA (2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design) and ICC A117.1 — govern the accessible route: clear width and opening, maneuvering clearance, reach ranges, and operable parts, and set where a LULA elevator or a platform lift may serve an accessible route in place of a passenger elevator.
  • The International Building Code — through the standards it references, sets when vertical access and an accessible route are required.
  • NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code) — governs the electrical service and disconnect.

Adopted editions and local amendments vary by the authority having jurisdiction across Louisiana and Alabama. The submittal is prepared to the edition your jurisdiction enforces.

Door and gate configurations

Door and gate configurations are specified to the ADA and ICC A117.1 clear-opening and maneuvering-clearance requirements. Options run from manual swing gates and doors to automatic sliding doors, depending on the line and the landing; the exact configuration, swing, and clear opening for each model and landing are on the submittal.

Cibes Symmetry LULA: automatic horizontally sliding two-speed hoistway and car doors, 3 ft 0 in x 6 ft 8 in, 36 in clear opening, with a full-height light curtain; single-entry, open-through or adjacent (90-degree) configurations. Harmar Highlander II: 36 in or 42 in platform gates with interlock, 36 in or 42 in landing gates or flush fire-rated doors, automatic door and gate openers optional; straight-through, same-side (not on the VPL400–VPL800) or 90-degree left or right. Cibes Symmetry VPL: 42 in platform gate; half-height (42 in) or full-height (80 in) landing gates, non-fire-rated wood door or 1 1/2-hour fire-rated steel (B-label) door, power operators optional; 32 in minimum clear opening (36 in narrow / 42 in wide on 90-degree entry); same-side, straight-through, 90-degree or three-opening. Per-landing detail is job-specific and sits in the submittal.

What we deliver for submittal and rough-in

When you send the drawings, we return the equipment submittal — spec sheets, dimensional data, and the code-compliance summary — plus the rough-in requirements so the pit, overhead, openings, and electrical are ready when the installers arrive.

Send us the drawings and configuration, and we'll return submittal-ready specs and the rough-in requirements for your jurisdiction.
