The stairs, and the steps, in a New Orleans house
The camelback, the raised center-hall cottage and the tall Uptown and Garden District houses carry their bedrooms up a stair that's often narrow and steep, with a turn in it. A stairlift rides that stair, straight or curved; a home elevator reaches the upper floor when a wheelchair has to come along or the stair won't take a lift. Outside, many houses sit on piers, and after past flooding many were raised higher still, so a full flight can stand between the sidewalk and the front door. A wheelchair ramp built to the height of your steps, or a platform lift where there's no room for a ramp, gets past that climb.

Common questions — New Orleans & Northshore
- Will a lift fit an old camelback or raised cottage?
Often, yes. A curved stairlift follows the turns many of these stairs have; where a stair is too tight or a wheelchair is involved, a home elevator reaches the upper level, and the vacuum and through-floor kinds go in with minimal construction. We measure your stair and put what fits in your quote.
- Can you get past the steps on a raised house?
Yes — that's what a wheelchair ramp or a platform lift is for. We size it to your steps and your yard.
