Homes built into the ridges

The Over-the-Mountain neighborhoods are built up and down the slopes of Red Mountain and Shades Mountain. A hillside lot means levels — a garage below, the main floor above it, bedrooms above that, often a daylight basement opening to the back yard. A home elevator ties the levels together; a stairlift rides a single run; a platform lift moves a wheelchair between two levels. Off the slopes, the two-story house is the common one across the Birmingham area, and a house set above its yard puts a run of steps at the entrance — a wheelchair ramp built to the right slope, or a platform lift where a ramp won't fit, gets past them.

Can an elevator connect the levels of a hillside home?

That's one of the best uses for a home elevator — one elevator can tie together the garage, the main floor and the bedroom level of a split-level or daylight-basement house on a slope. We look at the levels and the space and put what fits in your quote.

A single flight is the problem — do I need a whole elevator?

Not usually. A stairlift rides one run of stairs, straight or curved, and a platform lift moves a wheelchair between two levels. We match the equipment to the stair.
