Moving a wheelchair between floors.

When someone in the house uses a wheelchair, a set of stairs is a hard stop between one floor and the next. A platform lift carries a person and their chair between levels — up into the house, up to a raised floor, or between stories — so every floor of the home stays open to the person in it.

What a platform lift does, and where it fits

A platform lift (you may also hear it called a vertical platform lift, or VPL) is a flat platform big enough for a wheelchair and the person in it. It travels straight up and down between two levels, and it lets a wheelchair user change floors without leaving the chair.

  • Outside, it carries a person and chair up the height of a porch or a raised entrance.
  • Inside, it moves a chair between two stories where a full elevator isn't the plan.

It needs less construction than a traditional elevator. The models and specifications are on the platform lifts page.

If the question is getting upstairs on foot, a home elevator may fit better — we'll tell you straight which one your situation calls for.

How it goes

A call or request a quote, a look at the two levels you're connecting, and a written quote — the price, the timing, the warranty, and the name of the person in charge of your job — with no pressure to decide on the spot. Our installers show you how to run it before they leave.

Will a platform lift fit my home?
Most homes can take one — indoors between two levels, or outdoors at a raised entrance. We look at the levels you're connecting and tell you what fits, in the quote.
Platform lift or home elevator — which do we need?
A platform lift carries a chair between two levels and needs less construction; a home elevator is enclosed and carries you between floors, standing or seated. We'll tell you which your situation calls for.

Every floor of the house should be open to you — the level you enter on and the ones above it. Get a written quote for a platform lift — the price, the timing and the warranty, up front. Serving Louisiana and Alabama.
